Debate Among Literature

I was awakened from my slumber by the soft touch of vinyl against my hardened skin. When I breathed in, I noticed I wasn’t breathing the air of my controlled environment. I was wondering why I am being touched, it’s been eighteen months since I’ve been placed behind glass with thousands of people gawking over the words written on my skin.


The Vinyl glove that had brought me out of my lifeless state lifts me out of my case. He is a young man with an excited but nervous expression. He shakes as he softly clips me on a hard surface. He is asked to step aside by a more experienced hand. The elderly man lays a newspaper down next to me. The one in charge announces it is lunch time. The young man sighs a breath of relief. “It’s about time, man I’m starving.”

The Elderly man chuckles, “You have a lot to learn about patience and hard work.”

“Whatever,” The young one replies.

As the door is closed, I hear an announcement as if from a Newspaper peddler with a blow horn. “Pres. Obama tells Turkey that we are not a Christian Nation.”

“Wo” I exclaimed! That is not right. The newspaper is startled.

He asks, with contempt “Who are you?”

“I am the Constitution of the United States.” He replies, “It is a great honor to be talking to such a distinguished document as yourself.”

I ignore his flattery and ask him how you can spread this nonsense around. “Did you not know that there is supposed to be a separation of church and state,” he asked?

“Nonsense,” I retorted! That concept is nowhere to be found on my skin. In fact if you look at my preamble it states, “We do so ordain this Constitution under God.” Whatever gave you such a preposterous idea?

“You are so behind the times,” the newspaper said, mockingly.

“Are the values of this country built upon a wavering foundation that can be shifted through time?” “I think not” as I answered my own question. “The men who left their mark on me where ones who live and taught Christian values”. My predecessor the Declaration of Independence states, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

Well he only wanted to make good with the Arab nations, the modern paper stated.

“These men sign my predecessor with this statement,’” and for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor.’” These men would not cower before any nation and in return offend their God. These Founding Fathers came up with a motto ‘In God We Trust.’ ‘Know ye not that they fought against insurmountable odds to bring us freedom.’’ Know ye not that the only way they were successful was by calling on the unseen hand of Providence.’”

“These beliefs go against everything we’re being taught today”, The Newspaper replied adomnishiely.”

“I’ll have to have an article written on this,” he said. “I hope you really reflect on the meaning of the words and beliefs of our fathers,” I asked with sincerity.

The quiet of the room was disrupted by the opening of the door. The young man still excited from the respite with his friends spills the ink well, nearly missing my fragile and valuable skin.


The elderly man berates the young man, “Watch it, do you know what damage you could of cause?”

“It’s only an old paper,” The young man replied.

“I can’t believe you would say that. Do you not realize that this document is the very fabric of freedom?” The Old man chided. “Your very lifestyle is protected by this document. You realize that the rights you are so use to our protected by this very same document you almost scared for life.”

“I said I was sorry old man,” The youngster blurted.

“Go mop the floors, and after that go and clean the cases.” The barked order came from the old man.

The skilled hands returned to the stool and grabbed a brush and with craftsmanship repainted my lettering. Letting them burn within me as a commitment to searing the ideas of freedom and love of Providence into my soul. I uttered a silent prayer calling on Divine Providence to bless this great land.
